Intimate Worlds: A Group Exhibition
I was thrilled to be invited by NorthSite Contemporary Art Gallery Cairns to participate in a group exhibition entitled Intimate Worlds. Opening this Saturday 24 August, Intimate Worlds is one of a suite of three exhibitions taking place. The brief was to explore the materiality of our creative practice and to push boundaries of technique thus creating our own intimate world within our respective studios. Working in seclusion in our rainforest setting, I kind of do this most of the time anyway, but to be given permission and encouraged to continue this way of working in order to put together a body of work that celebrates this process was exciting.
The result of my endeavours is a series of handbuilt vessels entitled Scorched. They have been barrel fired using sawdust and offcuts from Garry’s (my husband) woodturning practice as well as various materials such as grass, leaves, paper, iron sulphate, rock salt, and red iron oxide. Most pots have a gorgeous metallic finish in their blackened surfaces which, sadly, I’ve not been able to capture in photos.
I feel honoured to have my ‘Scorched’ series showcased in the company of works by such gifted artists as Kim Nolan, Danish Quapoor, Lois Hayes, and artists from Bunda Art and Malki Studio. The exhibition opens on Saturday 24 August and will run until Saturday 12 October.
